Apply to the Self-Employment Training (SET) program and you may qualify for up to a year of free training and consultation from experienced business development consultants.

Grant funding of up to $1,000 may also be available to help cover your business startup costs. There is no cost to participate or to apply—SET is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Interested? Register now to learn more about and apply to the program. Once you register, you can view a short orientation about the program. After that, you will be able to apply online. The SET team will promptly process your application and you will be notified of the results.

Who is eligible? To qualify for SET you must:
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Qualify as a dislocated worker.
  • Propose a business idea that relates to your past work experience or overall expertise (see examples).
  • Agree to participate in a study of the program.
  • Live in a SET study site: Chicago, Illinois (City of Chicago and Cook County), Cleveland, Ohio (Cuyahoga and Lorain counties), Los Angeles, California (Los Angeles City and Los Angeles County), Portland, Oregon (Multnomah and Washington counties).

Public Burden Statement The SET Demonstration is being carried out under the legal authority of PL 105-220 (subtitle D [sections 171 and 172]). Completing this orientation for the SET Demonstration, which seeks to help the U.S. Department of Labor understand the effects of SET services on customers’ employment-related outcomes, is required in order to be considered for enrollment in the SET Demonstration. The public reporting burden for this orientation is estimated to average 30 minutes.
